WEEK 4

The demands of this century are forcing teachers to take a step further as far as the use of technology in the classroom is concerned. Our students are more digital skilled. However, can we ask ourselves if they really are computer literate?
Brandes and Ginnis, in their book A Guide to Student-Centred Learning (1986) refer that the students have responsibility for their learning and the teacher adopts the role of “facilitator and resource person”.
How can a teacher become a person of /with many resources? Which resources should we use? Are all technology resources/materials adequate to classroom use?
John Morgan and Mario Rinvolucri, in their book Once Upon a Time (1988), say that we should “tell a story for the sake of the listener, not for the sake of the story.” These words usually help me when I want to chose a story to read in class. Apart from the fact that we have to enjoy telling the story, the listener is the target. After reading this week’s reading, these words make even more sense as I read about the importance of designing and developing more student-oriented activities.
Mei-Ya Liang (Three Extensive Reading Activities for ESL/EFL Students Using E-books) presents us with activities which are very interesting and meet our needs today. Textbook technology is a fact and it is one of the materials that helps develop the 21st Century. Students develop their technology literacy and awareness as well as their critical thinking.

Jarek Krajka (Using the Internet in ESL Writing Instructions) promotes the use of web pages to help develop writing. The Internet is seen as a “teaching aid” to develop different writing genres. As far as Jarek is concerned, the use of Internet in language teaching covers not only the aspects of play and fun, but it also increases the quality of learning and helps achieve certain teaching goals.

This was a week filled with reading and extra reading as I searched for other resources. I got familiar with some of the materials available to facilitate our work as teachers and to develop the students’ knowledge of the English language. Planning a technology-enhanced lesson gave me the opportunity to reflect upon my teaching practice and what I want to change about it and long as I have the necessary resources available.

  • How can a teacher become a person of /with many resources?
  • Which resources should we use?
  • Are all technology resources/materials adequate to classroom use?
